So I was so happy last night after the Coming Out Ball that I changed my Facebook status to “is gay, just in case anyone was wondering.”
Alas, I forgot that some of my family members have been Facebook-friended, and limited profile does show status.
So I got this comment from my uncle: “I’m not surprised by your announcement, but I am disappointed. I guess that’s why you decided you really didn’t believe in God. Made it convenient to act in ways He condemns.”
Oh joy. Well, I guess it was going to happen sooner or later, anyway. No time like the present, eh?
Update…
So I responded in a message:
“Actually, my being gay has nothing to do with my disbelief in a Biblical God. Frankly, I don’t believe that an omnipotent being would be ignorant enough to condemn the things we cannot change.
The reason I don’t believe in God has more to do with the (1) lack of evidence, (2) possibility that people only believe in God to give them a “purpose” in life, instead of some logical argument.
Have you heard of Russell’s teapot? Here’s a link: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Celestial_teapot
I don’t expect you to agree with me on anything, really. But I want you to understand that, first of all, being gay is something that I couldn’t change if I wanted to, and second of all, my being gay has nothing to do with my disbelief in God.”
We’ll see how this pans out. Hopefully I don’t get shot.
